I am still in shock. I am not sore about losing but in not competing. It only hurts more when the opposition are so visibly delighted and we have absolutely nothing to look back on.
The England Group games only flattered to deceive. We didn't show any real form in any of the games. Although the defeat of Slovenia was an improvement the warning signs were there of our imminent destruction.
Still we have to look on the bright side. It is just possible that Germany have handed us a chance for a fresh start. The shame should induce the FA into a root and branch review of what it means to play football in this country. We are throwing huge amounts of money at the upper end of the game. Perhaps this result will force a degree of soul searching. As long as it comes to the right conclusions it will be worth it in the long run. We have perhaps drifted along on the wave of hope and expectation and now we have been brought up short. What has gone before does not work so let us see how we could do it differently and better
Capello must take a lot of the flak for this purely because he was in charge. The players did not perform, especially against Algeria, and for that they must shoulder the blame. But to sack Capello would leave us no better off. We would have learnt nothing. The right choice for the FA is to ask of Capello what does he intend to do next? How is he going to move the team forward. He should only be shown the door if he fails to learn the lessons of 2010
It should be mentioned that the back four was not even his second choice. Well Upson anyway. Ferdinand injured before the tournament, King already a doubt. He could have picked Carragher but I am not sure it would have made any difference. We will never know.
So to conclude we must take a big long look at ourselves and they way we play in this country. Surely now is a good time to introduce a mid season break, even if only for the Premiership. We should not dismiss any ideas to promote our squad at this stage.
