And so my son's football season ended as it began, in almost total confusion!

Before each game a post code that matches that of the away game's pitch is circulated to all the team for the benefit of the owners of satnav devices. Unfortunately, if my son isn't there to collect it himself, it becomes a game of Chinese whispers and the final code handed to me within minutes of the kick off bears no resemblance to an actual post code.

The code for this game was in fact a real one but placed me four square in the middle of a housing estate of dubious quality. And no football pitches in sight. I gave up driving around after an hour. The light was starting to fade and the local Rosser's are having a crackdown on kerb crawling. So I missed the match. It can't have been a good one as my son couldn't recall the score.

They have improved a lot as a team over the season. The manager looked a forlorn sight in the early part of the year as goal after goal was conceded but eventually the team improved to the point where it was actually worth shouting at them a lot.

It was quite evident to me that they had the best back four in the league and a decent 'keeper. Unfortunately that is where it ended. The 'keeper would hoof the ball up field only for an opposition head to put it straight back. They were always under pressure. They needed a bit more commitment from the mid field. It was slow but it came together gradually and they finished their season playing the full game on equal terms. Even if they still lost.

A definite hats off to the manager for making a difference.

A change of subject. One of my favourite writers, Douglas Adams, once wrote about lifts with personality programed in. The problem for the lift was that it could see into the future and at the moment the stories hero wanted to go up the lift only wanted to go down and hide in the basement. It knew the building was about to be attacked.

I was wtuck in a lift trying to do a similar thing today. I stepped in and pushed the buton for the second floor. Another couple stepped in and pushed for the next floor to mine. Before the doors had even started to move the lift decided it was going nowhere and extinguished all the call lights. So we pushe them again. A Little truculently the doors closed and it began it's short ascent. IT extinguished all the call buttons as it did so.

The lift did arrive at my floor but I shared a moment of anxiety for the other occupants as the lift doors closed and it went i know not where. They might still be there for all I know.
