June 6th 1944

I awoke this morning with the sun shining. There was a breeze in the air but it feelt like it was going to be a good day! I can't adequately explain how I believed that but sometimes you just feel good. Then I remembered the date. On this morning 71 years ago thousands of Allied troops had already lost their lives before I even stirred. Men of similar age to my son. Dead.
It is a humbling thought. I know there have been several big celebrations at the big anniversaries but it falls to all of usto remember teh sacrifice at all the other times. the relevance ofthis event is perhaps not fully understood by my children's generation but the their lives have truly been affected by the events of 1944. They teach it at school but it doesn't always quite capture the reality.

I am not sure where the quote comes from but it is said that those that don't learn from history are condemed to repeat it!
