An afternoon in Starbucks

I didn't have a productive Sunday today. After a lazy lie in and late Brunch. I pondered my next move. I have a nasty habit of overspending soon after payday so I was determined to keep it on the down low for now.

After much procrastination I finally drove into Durham. I have the latest Martin  Cruz-Smith novel lying around so I decided I would find a coffee shop and just read a bit and let the world go by under my nose.

Durham is a good place for a short picturesque walk and is well equipped to provide sustenance to the weary traveller of many hues and wallet. I was particularly unadventurous today in that I selected Starbucks. I am not a great fan of their coffee generally (I prefer Nero's blend but that is by the by) Starbucks have a lot more space than most other competitors in Durham and I recently listened to a broadcast where several individuals felt no compunction in spending all day as a guest of Starbucks with only one coffee purchased. I did want to get a bit of reading done and I didn't want to be bothered by staff trying to boot me out.

It was a dreary day. I walked along the riverside to my fave spot overlooking the cathedral but sped on as it was raining

Once inside I noticed the tables set up close to all the power points and the laptops connected to them. I did just wonder whether you had to have an Apple computer to use the sockets because throughout that store that was the only manufacturer on show. I discretely pocketed my Google phone lest I was hounded out by the staff and/or patrons -
"Get out! you are not one of us!" Mac users are a strange lot after all!

So I sat with my regular filter coffee and a couple of biscuits euphemistically labelled "Ginger Crunch" More like Ginger Grind as I nearly lost teeth trying to bite into them then chew.

I was mostly the oldest person in the room. A few oldies came in but did take out instead of sitting. And I listened to the muzak. I was first pleased to hear a few great tunes from my recent past (Jesus Jones, Blur, Lenny Kravitz, B-52's) and realised that this was probably like me listening to the Beatles when I was 18 that is how old this music was. And I felt a bit old! either that or I am a little bit more trendy than I thought, I live in hope.

Maybe I was a little down because as I wondered the banks of the wear I reminisced on my sojourns with my young children and whom are now of an age where they don't like to be seen in public with their embarrassing parent.

I had finished my coffee and burnt through a few chapters of my book when i was finally driven from the store. But not by staff or jealous Mac types

It is not a horrible song by any means but I have just heard it SO MANY TIMES. There is a radio station here called Metro Radio. When it was first released back in the bad old days of the late 1990's I decided that the station must have misplaced it's entire record collection
Natalie bloody Imruglia!

At work the station was always on in the department and Torn was played about every 3rd song for at least 2 years. I left the place after 2 years unable to listen to the same song any more.

There is no point to this story, I just thought you ought to know. That's all.
