European dilemma

My son has just turned 18 and will hopefully be casting his first vote in the upcoming European election.

It has been a feature of my fatherhood however that at each moment of my children's development, when one of them has actually requested an opinion on weighty matters, I have been rendered into a spluttering wreck, unable to know where to begin.

And such was the moment over breakfast this week when my son asked me who UKIP were. The best answer I could come up with, allowing for the fact I had just inhaled a large piece of toast with an almighty dollop of marmalade on top, was that they were a "bunch of loonies who want us to leave the European Union." Half fact and half opinion. I will let you work out which is which.

I just disappointed that , what with all the mudslinging I have tried to do on these pages that that was the best I could come up with.

I think he had them pretty well sussed when he asked if they were just the "New BNP". I don't think you would have to dig very deep to root out such individuals

The appointed aim of UKIP is just to withdraw from the EU but unfortunately a large proportion of this persuasion are already xenophobes and racists. UKIP as a party has a creed of inclusivity and respect for ethnicity and diversity but the evidence of it's supporters is that this is not what they are voting for.
